Haitian poet Anthony Phelps honored in Montreal on World Poetry Day

The city of Montreal, on the occasion of World Poetry Day, honored Haitian poet Anthony Phelps, the poems of his first collections—Summer (1960), Presence (1961), and The Radiant Silence (1962)—are notable for their intellectuality. In his collection Thou, My Country (1968), he presents Haiti as a beautiful country oppressed by poverty but preserving hope for freedom and the memory of a courageous past .

Born in Port-au-Prince August 25, 1928, Anthony Phelps is a poet and novelist. He is associated with many cultural and social activities both in Haiti and Montreal. With big names of Haitian literature, including poets Davertige, Serge Legagneur, Roland Morisseau, René Philoctète, and Auguste Thénor, Phelps founded in 1961, the "literary Haiti" group and the journal "Semences" (Seeds).
