Catherine Flon

Catherine Flon played a key part in Haiti’s history, she with other prominent women in Haiti’s history, worked along male counterparts in conquest of the country’s independence. Catherine was originally from Arcahaie, according to most Haitian historians, and she is the seamstress of the first Haitian flag.

She sewed the flag on May 18 1803, which happened to be the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie. She was also the goddaughter of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. She is the only female to have her image on Haitian currency and thanks to feminist organizations there is a square named after her on the Champ de Mars. Still after many years her name is synonymous with the symbol of the birth of the first black nation. By Rachele Viard
