Boosting the sisal industry in the Northeast

Introduced for the first time in Haiti in 1926 under US occupation, the cultivation of sisal has experienced various fortunes over the years. In 1952, it placed Haiti as the world’s largest exporter.

ll"The Dauphin plantation in the Northeast was the largest sisal plantation in the world in 1952 with a production of 35,000 tons of fiber. Which at the time represented 25% of the GDP in Haiti and provided more than 20,000 direct jobs," said Pierre-Yves Gardère, an official of SISALCO SA, a local sisal company, during a presentation on March 24th on the revival of this sector.
