Emmanuel Macron refused Laurent Nuñez's resignation after the violence on Saturday in several major cities, and asked the Minister of the Interior to deploy "as quickly as possible on the ground new modes of action (...) against the rioters," the Elysée announced on Monday.
"Given the necessity for continuous command of law enforcement in the current context, the President of the Republic refused" Mr. Nuñez's resignation, who is under heavy pressure after numerous scenes of violence during the protests.
The Head of State also again demanded "transparency," pointing to "failures of anticipation and intelligence" that led to riots, destruction, and looting of many businesses.
