Conservative senator Flavio Bolsonaro surprised on Sunday in the first round of Brazil's presidential election by leading over leftist incumbent President Lula, whom he will face in the runoff on October 25.

After 98.36% of the ballots were counted, the 45-year-old son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro garnered more than 47% of the votes, compared to nearly 45% for leftist veteran Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80 years old.

According to electoral authorities, a runoff is mathematically guaranteed.
