The Organization of Citizens for a New Haiti (OCNH) reports serious irregularities in the criminal chain and civil status in the departments of Grand’Anse and Nippes. The OCNH claims to have conducted an assessment mission from August 11 to 14, 2026, highlighting several issues including a lack of logistical resources preventing transfers and hearings, worsening prolonged pretrial detention; systematic violations of fair trial rights and prison overcrowding; the usurpation of judicial functions by clerks, and absenteeism of magistrates. In light of these findings, the organization recommends urgent measures to the relevant authorities such as disciplinary inspections, logistical support, regularization of civil status offices, and protection of detainees. It calls on authorities and the international community to act swiftly to restore the rule of law and guarantee fundamental rights.
