Five weeks of competition across three countries (Mexico, the United States, and Canada) and 48 participating teams: the FIFA World Cup officially kicked off on Thursday with an opening ceremony at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium, where singer Shakira thrilled the crowd of 80,000 spectators.

The approximately twenty-minute show preceded the first of the tournament’s 104 matches between Mexico and South Africa (scheduled for 1:00 p.m. local time, 9:00 p.m. in Paris), a remake of the opening match of the 2010 World Cup.
