Higher Education: Haiti’s Growing Reliance on Dominican Institutions

With more than 2,200 foreign students enrolled in its universities and expenditures estimated at $44.5 million in 2024, the Dominican Republic confirms its position as a major academic destination in the region. Driven notably by the attractiveness of its medical programs, this expanding model primarily attracts Haitian students, while rapidly diversifying with an international clientele with greater purchasing power.

The Dominican Republic is consolidating its position as a higher education destination in the region. According to data from the Dominican Central Bank (Banco Central de la República Dominicana – BCRD), cited in an article published by the Dominican online media outlet Acento, the neighboring country has 2,250 foreign students enrolled in its universities.
