Cardiovascular diseases are now the leading cause of death in Haiti, surpassing infectious diseases such as cholera or malaria. Hypertension ranks first: around 30% of study participants have high blood pressure. Among those under 30, 23% are hypertensive—an alarming figure, 2 to 8 times higher than that observed in African-American populations. This high prevalence among young people poses a significant long-term risk of cardiovascular complications.
