What Happened to the Training Center for Fundamental Schools in Port-au-Prince?

Founded in June 1999, the Centre de Formation pour l’École Fondamentale (CFEF) was established in Martissant 1, in the former premises of the École Normale d’Instituteurs. For over two decades, it trained hundreds of teachers for the three cycles of fundamental education at this site, near Église Sainte-Bernadette. With the rise of gang activity in this neighborhood on the southern outskirts of the capital since June 2021, Le Nouvelliste sought to find out what has become of the CFEF.

"The CFEF fled Martissant due to gang activity shortly after the events of June 1, 2021. From that moment on, the institution was left without a location, and students launched protests demanding that the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) provide a new facility," reported Jacques Ronald Jean, director of the CFEF, to Le Nouvelliste.
