Île de la Tortue a haven of Caribbean piracy

Île de la Tortue (Turtle Island) is a 180 square island located in Haiti’s Northwestern Department. In the 17th century, it was a major hub for pirates. The Spaniards landed in Île de la Tortue in 1492 during Christopher Columbus’ first voyage into the new world.

The island along with Port Royal in Jamaica were the strongest and safest buccaneer ports. Many attacks on the Spaniards were organized on Île de la Tortue.
