The nation’s currency is referred to as “gourde” and dates all the way back to 1807 when President Christophe made the gourde the base of Haitian currency. It is said the name gourde was chosen because, the gourd plant was and still is so important in Haiti. The term Gourd is occasionally used to describe crop plants in the family Cucurbitaceae, like pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, luffa, and melons. The gourd plant is used several ways here in the country.
