Larry and Gwen Mellon

William Larimer (Larry) and Gwen Mellon’s, founders of the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, love and passion for the country began many years ago. It all started with an article (or photo essay) in the October 6, 1947 issue of Life Magazine on Dr. Albert Schweitzer with photographs by Erica Anderson which sparked in Larry Mellon a need to follow his example. The seed however, might have been planted before that. His mother had told him when he was young - that the people she admired most in the world were medical missionaries.

This occurred as the Mellons were decorating their newly built home on their ranch in Arizona. When Larry told Gwen, 'I think I'll become a doctor and practice in the underdeveloped world,'' The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in her obituary that she replied, ''You're right, we don't want to sit around looking at the damn cows all our lives.'' This short exchange between the couple was the catalyst of a journey that would change their lives and affect a community long after both their deaths. Dr. Schweitzer established a hospital in Gabon,
