Before the arrival of the Spaniards, Haiti and the Dominican Republic were divided into 5 kingdoms. The Marien, Magua, Maguana, Xaragua, and Hyguey and their people were known as Arawaks and Caribs. Anacaona ruled Xaragua which is now southwest Haiti. She is often referred to as Haiti’s Golden Flower as her name suggests.
