Supreme Court building inaugurated

On July 14th, 23 months after the laying of the first stone of the Supreme Court building by the President of the Republic of Haiti, Michel J. Martelly and President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ma Ying-Jeou, the two Heads of State inaugurated the new building of the Court of Cassation. The ceremony was held in the presence of members of the delegations of the two countries of the former president of Haiti, Boniface Alexandre, President of the Senate Andris Riché, honorable judges of the Supreme Court, members the diplomatic and consular corps, and members of human rights organizations. "In the name of God, peace to the Supreme Court and to all who enter and those that will come out" said Cardinal Chibly Langlois as he blessed the new building built on an area of 4262 m2. A minute's silence was observed in memory of the judges who lost their lives during the earthquake of January 12, 2010 at the courthouse. Erected near the National Palace, this new building is a gift from the Taiwanese government to the Haitian government following the earthquake.

Recalling that many public buildings in the country were destroyed in the 2010 earthquake, President Martelly stressed that he made the reconstruction of the Palace of the Supreme Court a priority of his mandate. "This symbol of the state, justice and the judiciary, more than a century old, was the very heart of the justice system.
