Better management of water in the Artibonite basin

To reduce flooding, erosion and increase agricultural productivity in the watershed of the Artibonite River, a water management program has been implemented in the Artibonite basin. Through this program, proponents intend to address structural and cyclical problems which the local population is facing.

There is no doubt that the catchment area of the Artibonite is the largest watershed in Haiti, and the Artibonite River is the primary source of hydroelectric power and water for irrigation. Upstream of the Péligre dam, agriculture, livestock, and coal production are the main sources of income for about 15,000 rural households. The following data shows the importance of good water management in the Artibonite basin. More than 70,000 rural families depend on 30,000 hectares of irrigated area to grow rice that accounts for 80% of national product
