The General Director of SMCRS launches new sanitation plan for the metropolitan area

On July 8th, Donald Paraison, General Director of the Metropolitan Solid Waste Collection Service (SMCRS in French), presented its new action plan pertaining to the unsanitary conditions in the Port au Prince metropolitan area. 1,500 jobs will be created as part of the implementation of this plan to clean up the 8 municipalities concerned.

The SMCRS General Director said that the sanitation problem is due to multiple factors, including the number of small markets in all corners of the capital and low private sector investment in the waste management system. More than 80% of the waste produced by households is dumped on the streets in one form or another, according to Paraison. To cope with this problem and to attract tourists to the country during the summer holidays, SMCRS launched the action plan which comprises two phases.
