Digicel blocks VOIP applications running unlicensed in Haiti

VOIP operators functioning without a license in Haiti, such as Viber, Tango, and Nimbuzz have been blocked on the Digicel network since June 17, 2014, Digicel informed in a press release dated June 20th. This measure was taken in order to recover the millions in lost tax revenue and the National Education Fund for the government of Haiti, according to the explanations provided by the company.

“These VOIP applications (Viber, Tango and Nimbuzz) use telecommunications networks to provide services, but they do not pay for the privilege,” the press release stated. As a result, Digicel has been forced to resort to this measure in the hope that other local operators will follow suit. Discussions with VOIP service providers are ongoing.
