Respecting Manual Labor

Liberal professions are well perceived by Haitians. As opposed to manual trades which are devalued and treated with neglect. This did not deter Anisette Philama from enrolling in an auto mechanic program shortly before turning 20. After many difficulties, she decided to change field and switched to electricity, which, according to her, is more feasible for a young woman currently. After three years of hard work, she became pregnant.

She had two children and was supported by her father who understood that life does not end after giving birth. He boosted his daughter’s self-esteem, and she returned to the La Salle Vocational School in Port-de-Paix to learn dressmaking. She graduated in 1996 after three years of study, and formed her own private business center and also works in the public sector, performing all sorts of odd jobs.
