Montana, between memories and new beginnings

Montana Hotel was the largest hotel in Haiti on January 12, 2010. Perched on a hill overlooking the bay of Port au Prince and Delmas, it resembled a bee hive. After the earthquake it became known as the quake’s epicenter. We do not know the exact amount of victims despite the numerous rescue efforts attempted in this area. Today the hotel still stands without forgetting a thing. A visit to the Hotel’s memorial on the 4th anniversary.

This particular concrete beam weighs no more than a few kilos. Its fate, by chance, was changed that day. The beam was recovered in the rubble. Some read the engravement on the beam in silence while some choke or have tears in the corners of their eyes. It read “In Remembrance of January 12, 2010”. It sits at the base of a regenerating tree trunk. There is a rosary hanging from a nail in the tree trunk. A smile on the face of a white man, beard, glasses, catches the eye in the photo.
