Dany Laferrière elected to Académie française (French Academy)

Thursday, December 12, 2013 is etched in Haitian and Canadian history. On the 12th, a first in history occurred, one that will not soon be forgotten. The prominent Académie française (French Academy) elected Haitian writer, Dany Laferrière in the very first round.

Born in Port-au-Prince, the 60 year old novelist, poet, and filmmaker, is the youngest member of the institution. He succeeds Argentinean author, Hector Bianciotti who passed in 2012. Dany Laferrière, famed Haitian author will assume Seat 2 at the Académie, the seat which was held by Alexandre Dumas, also of Caribbean decent. The French Academy was established in 1635 by Richelieu to maintain standards of literary taste and to establish the literary language.
