Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) – catapult to investments

Intellectual Property Rights is a difficult issue to tackle in Emerging Markets due to weak legal systems, and uneducated consumers buying “fake” products. This is not a problem just in Emerging Markets, but also in developed countries. Today one can still see the fake purses and watches being sold on Canal Street in New York City. Intellectual Property violations cost companies billions of dollars throughout the world, with some countries having more success than others in protecting companies.

The IP situation in Haiti has gotten the attention of the government which has a campaign on radio and television about “copies” of books, videos and CDs. This is a great initiative by the government, but there is no information on arrests being made by violators.
