Celebration of the Battle of Vertières at Fleurenceau Presbyterian School

On Monday November 18th, the 400 students of the Fleurenceau Presbyterian School in Saint-Marc commemorated the 210th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières in a big way. Historic conferences, folk dances, poems, and even a play increased the awareness of the scope of the Haitian epic.

Called "Day of the Battle of Vertières," the ceremony began with a presentation by Thomy Batalien, a teacher, deemed to be the best from the town of Nissage Saget. He presented the students with the greatest moments in the history of Haiti. Batalien notably focused on the revolutions of 1789, 1791, and 1803 explaining to students the slave system and inviting them to fight against the sequels of slavery.
