APCAB coffee sacred champion of Haiti

The Association of Coffee Growers of Belle-Anse (APCAB in French) won the first edition of "National Quality Coffee of Haiti Competition,” organized on March 6 and 7, 2015 at the Hotel Montana under the auspices of the National Platform of Coffee Growers of Haiti (PNPCH in French). Two other awards were presented during the ceremony: the Cup of Excellence and the title of best Haitian taster.

For four days, foreign and local tasters savored and smelled coffee from different coffee-growing areas of the country during the first edition of the National Quality Coffee of Haiti Competition. Through this competition, the PNPCH decided to distinguish the organization that produced the boldest coffee in 2015. The coffee prepared by APCAB was declared the winning coffee and earned a score of 84.94. Based in Thiotte, APCAB’s coffee is sold on the local and international market under the name of the following trademarks: Café foret des pins bleu, Marre blanche, and Gros cheval. "The quality of the coffee is an essential element in determining its prices on the international market. With the increasing quality of our coffee, we will be able to sell our coffee on the international market at the same price as other cafes of its rank," said one of the APCAB leaders. Coffee producer Sylverain Ocnel won the Cup of Excellence for the flavor of his coffee. A member of APCAB, Ocnel was represented by his son during the ceremony. The prize for best Haitian taster was won by Merisier Panel, a taster at the National Coffee Institute of Haiti (INCAH in French). "I am the son of a coffee producer in Thiotte. Since my childhood, coffee has been my passion,” he said. Joubert Angrand, INCAH Coordinator said that this contest could further stimulate farmers to produce better quality coffee. "When coffee quality is defined, it is possible to sell it at a maximum price. When the producer knows that coffee is good, he will not sell it on the market standard in New York. “ “There is a lot of quality coffee produced in Haiti. Haitian farmers could get better prices on the international market. In order to have a quality coffee, we must make considerable efforts.
