Conservative Senator Flavio Bolsonaro surprised everyone on Sunday in the first round of the presidential election in Brazil by leading the leftist incumbent president Lula, whom he will face in the second round on October 25.
After counting 98.36% of the ballots, the 45-year-old son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro received over 47% of the votes, compared to nearly 45% for the leftist veteran Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80.
According to electoral authorities, a second round is mathematically assured.
