If there were a Haitian pantheon where contemporary figures would rest, Guylène Salès-Bouchereau would find her place there today. An extraordinary woman has just passed away—one to whom we owe much.

She grew up in a family of ten siblings. Her life changed entirely when she was only 19 years old: her father, Jean Bouchereau, was assassinated without reason on April 26, 1963, by the regime of François Duvalier. Her brothers and sisters, raised by a mother now alone, would grow up in fear of being arrested
