The Collège de France to Host a Conference on Haiti’s Double Debt of Independence

From June 12 to 14, 2025, the Collège de France will host a symposium on the dual debt of Haitian independence. Organized by the chair “History of the Enlightenment, 18th–21st Century,” this conference, which will gather dozens of participants from Haiti, the Caribbean, and Europe, will be held under the theme: “Haiti 1825: From Independence to Debt.”

The symposium on the dual debt of Haitian independence will be held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of that event this year. According to the organizers, the symposium has three objectives. It aims to “take stock of the episode of 1825 with the leading experts on the subject, in order to understand how the indemnities were calculated and then paid, the context in which they were imposed on Haiti, the consequences they had—both short and long term—on Haitian society, economy, and politics, as well as the commercial cond
