France Moves to Initiative on Double Independence Debt

During a visit to Paris in January 2025, President Leslie Voltaire revealed that, on his own initiative, French President Emmanuel Macron had raised with him the issue of the double debt of Independence. The French president had told him that he would make a statement on the matter in April 2025, a date that coincides with the imposition — under threat from the warships of King Charles X of France — of the ransom extorted from Haiti to compensate the former slave owners of the colony of Saint-Domingue.
