70 Years of Compas: The Rich History of the Haitian Compas Festival

For 27 years, ahead of the summer season, he has been making South Florida pulse to the rhythm of Haitian music. Rodney Noël, one of the founding members of this major event, was the guest on Magik 9’s morning show on Saturday, August 2, 2025. He looked back on the origins of the festival and its evolution over the years.

Two sons of Port-de-Paix are behind this vibrant event: Rodney Noël and Jean Michel Cerenord. Yet, they met far from their hometown nearly 30 years ago. “I used to regularly visit a record store in Florida, and one day Jean Michel came looking for a cassette of a live performance by Triomec’s Sans Complexe. That’s where we met and became friends,” recalls Rodney Noël.
