UNESCO Declares Cassava Bread an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Following the inscription of soup joumou, cassava has now been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Submitted by Haiti, Cuba, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, this marks the first multinational inscription involving Haiti.

Cassava has risen to the pinnacle of gastronomy. During the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, in Asunción, Paraguay, cassava was officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List.
