218th Anniversary of Dessalines' Assassination Commemorated by CPT and Government

On Thursday, October 17, Haiti commemorated the 218th anniversary of the death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, one of the nation's founding fathers. This year, the commemoration took place at Champ de Mars, at the Haitian National Pantheon Museum (MUPANAH), and the Villa d'Accueil, instead of the usual Pont-Rouge location. The event was held in two parts.

The first part, a floral offering in memory of Dessalines’ assassination, was conducted at MUPANAH under heavy security, with the sound of automatic gunfire in the background. Seven of the nine members of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT), with Louis Gérald Gilles and Laurent Saint-Cyr absent, participated in the ceremony. This brief event also marked the first public appearance of Edgard Leblanc Fils since his departure as coordinator of the CPT.
