Clarification on the Meteorological Phenomenon that Hit Bassin Bleu

The Civil Protection Directorate reclassified the meteorological phenomenon that affected the commune of Bassin Bleu on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. According to Emmanuel Pierre, Director of Operations at the National Emergency Operations Center (COUN), it was a "large-scale whirlwind," contrary to reports of a tornado.

"The technical institution responsible for monitoring hazards and weather, the Hydrometeorological Unit (UHM), takes precautions not to classify the observed phenomenon as a tornado," revealed Emmanuel Pierre on the airwaves of Magik 9 this Wednesday, May 22. From a technical point of view, he specified, a tornado is characterized by a cone, a rotational movement, and a diameter ranging from 50 to 100 meters, among other features.
