2023: The Year Dominated by Forced Migration and Repatriations

Migration movements in Haiti continue to present major challenges, especially with the forced returns of Haitians to their country of origin. These returns, often resulting from attempts at irregular migration, raise concerns about the safety and reintegration of the individuals concerned into their original community, as indicated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in a study published on May 12, 2024.

In 2023, over 216,000 Haitians were forcibly returned to Haiti by various countries, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These returns, although they may be perceived as an obstacle, do not deter some individuals from attempting, sometimes repeatedly, to leave the country in search of a better life.

According to data shared by the IOM, the Dominican Republic is the country that returned the most Haitians in 2023, with 208,169 compatriots returned, accounting for 96% of the total number. Turks
