Hundreds of Haitians Return to Country After Pursuing Better Life in Turkey

Hundreds of Haitian nationals arrived at Toussaint Louverture international airport from Turkey on Friday February 23. Having left in search of a better life, these Haitians are returning home after a journey marked by disappointment.

Nelson, 27, has just stepped off the bus transporting nationals arriving from Turkey. This young man from Thomassique made the long journey in 2018. At the time, Nelson had just failed his 9th grade exams. Full of dreams, Nelson embarked on an adventure at the age of 21.

"I left in search of a better life," says Nelson thoughtfully, standing under the tent set up by International Organization for Migration (IOM) agents. "Initially, it was a beautiful experience," he says.
