Detainees' Plight as Jacmel Prosecutor's Office Operates with Only One Investigating Judge

Pierre Wilner Dormevil, the government commissioner at the Jacmel Court of First Instance, has raised concerns about the functioning of the judicial system in his jurisdiction. To serve his entire jurisdiction, which includes all the municipalities of the Southeast, the government commissioner stated in an interview with Magik 9 on December 8, 2023, that he only has one investigating judge and one dean. This situation, he says, has an impact on the prison situation.

"At the court, we only have one investigating judge and one dean. Can an investigating judge both instruct a case and make a ruling? Legally, it's impossible," stated Pierre Wilner Dormevil.

"At present, this investigating judge is handling 243 cases, and I have 30 more cases for which I have issued an information request and will be forwarded to the clerk, bringing the total number of cases for this investigating judge to 270," he reported.
