Local Production Supplies 50% of WFP School Canteen Program This Year

The WFP's school canteen program, launched in 2015, continues its successful trajectory. For the 2023-2024 school year, local production feeds no less than 50% of the 459,705 beneficiaries. In summary, the WFP purchases approximately $1 million worth of local products each month from 150 organizations involving over 6,000 producers.

Since 2015, the World Food Programme (WFP) has turned to local producers to supply its school canteen. In eight years, this strategy has experienced continuous growth. While local markets fed only 1% of beneficiaries (3,500 students out of 491,500) in the 2015-2016 school year, local production now feeds no less than 50% of beneficiaries (229,404 students out of 459,705). These figures were shared by the WFP's Country Director, Jean Martin Bauer, on his X account (formerly Twitter).
