South-East: The boat that sank violated the SEMANAH order

At least two individuals have lost their lives, and fourteen survivors, including one in critical condition, have been rescued following the tragic sinking of the Métropole boat, which was en route from Anse-à-Pitre to Marigot. The incident took place off the coast of Grosse Pointe on Saturday, June 3rd. According to Carlo Cerome from the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH), the boat was carrying an excessive load, causing it to submerge below the waterline. Consequently, SEMANAH had explicitly prohibited the captain from embarking on the voyage, but his disregard for the ban proved disastrous.

SEMANAH, in a notice issued on June 3rd, has urged small vessels to remain in their respective home ports or seek sheltered waters until further notice due to the unstable weather conditions affecting a significant portion of the Caribbean basin. Certain areas at sea are notably more turbulent than others.
