Former Paraguayan president Santiago Peña, ousted Friday evening by the Senate for his role in a banking crisis affecting nearly three million savers, was shortly thereafter placed under house arrest, announced a representative of the prosecutor's office.

Santiago Peña "will remain under house arrest at his home" tonight, prosecutor Silvia Margarita González Vester told reporters. She added that the ousted president would be heard on Saturday at 11:00 local time (14:00 GMT) at the prosecutor's office regarding the alleged offenses of breach of trust, influence peddling, and mismanagement for personal gain.
