ONI Provides an Update on Defective National ID Cards, New Equipment, and Data Security

Appearing on Panel Magik on July 3, 2026, as part of the "Kat ou la" program, the Director General of the National Identification Office (ONI), Reynold Guerrier, outlined the institution's main achievements, ranging from the replacement of defective identification cards and the modernization of equipment to strengthened protection of citizens' personal data.

The starting point was clear: the identification cards produced between 2019 and 2021 suffered from manufacturing defects. After several years of use, the ONI observed that many cards were deteriorating rapidly, even when they had been properly stored by their holders. Initially, the institution attributed the damage to improper handling by citizens. However, internal reviews revealed otherwise: even well-preserved cards were losing their lamination or developing cracks. The problem, therefore, stemmed from the material used by the supplier.
