Streetlights out of service, others barely working, extend the blackness and turn the space into a discreet refuge. Sheltered from view, couples meet, embrace, and lounge on public benches. The surrounding streets, particularly Church Street, are also swallowed by darkness. The silence there is muffled, punctuated by whispers and hurried footsteps.
