In New York, the 34-year-old local lawmaker defeated former state governor Andrew Cuomo, a centrist, and Republican Curtis Sliwa, according to projections from several U.S. media outlets. On January 1, Zohran Mamdani will become the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in the United States.
