Category 5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall at midday on Tuesday, October 28. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), it struck southwestern Jamaica near New Hope as a powerful Category 5 hurricane. Around 1 p.m., the NHC reported that the hurricane was crossing the western part of the island with violent winds reaching speeds of 300 km/h, along with flash floods and storm surges.
