Four Years After Moïse’s Assassination, Reactions Are Fading

On July 7, 2021, the Republic woke up in shock. Early in the morning, videos were shared online showing images of an alleged operation in the residential area of former President Jovenel Moïse, who was still in office at the time. Information quickly spread across the internet, with some reporting explosions that allegedly targeted the President’s residence. A little later, the news was confirmed: Jovenel Moïse had been assassinated.

“Around one in the morning, during the night of Tuesday, July 6 to Wednesday, July 7, 2021, a group of unidentified individuals, some of whom spoke Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic, fatally wounding the Head of State. The First Lady, who was shot, is receiving the medical care her condition requires,” announced a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, signed by Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, condemning the act as “heinous, inhumane, and barbaric.”
