UN warns Haiti is Getting Closer to the “Precipice”

The gangs have further strengthened their control of the Haitian capital, where a “total collapse” of state presence could become a “very real scenario,” the UN warned on Wednesday, describing a country increasingly “on the edge of the abyss.”

In recent months, “we have continued to see a clear erosion of state authority and the rule of law. The brutal gang violence affects all aspects of public and private life,” commented Miroslav Jenca, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Americas, speaking before the Security Council.
