Haiti’s 1825 Debt Revisited at the Collège de France: Is Reparations Time Here?

That was the prevailing sentiment at the conclusion of three days of reflection on the 1825 debt, held on June 12, 13, and 14, during which, despite the nearly unbearable heat not conducive to introspection, Paris saw the Collège de France draw a studious and passionate audience. Researchers from Haiti, the Caribbean, the United States, France, and Europe gathered to reflect on and discuss Haiti’s history.

The theme of this international conference, “Haiti 1825: From Independence to Debt,” is of burning rel
