New Encyclopedic Dictionary Aims to Promote Understanding of Haiti

For its 31st edition, Livres en folie, the country's largest annual literary event, is dedicated to reference works on Haiti. In this regard, the Dictionnaire encyclopédique d'Haïti (DEH) arrives at just the right time. Published in two volumes, the DEH aims on one hand to "gather and make accessible a wide range of data on Haiti," and on the other to "provide elements of information and reflection on various aspects of Haitian life and society."

The result of over three decades of effort, patience, and perseverance, the DEH stands as a groundbreaking tool to help Haitians reconnect with their own country. Co-edited by the rector of Quisqueya University (UniQ), Jacky Lumarque, and Professor Guy Maximilien, this encyclopedic work seeks to fill a glaring gap in Haitian education and culture. “Haitians do not know their own country—especially the youth, high school students, and university students,” lamented Jacky Lumarque during a June 16 interview on Panel Magik
