Gang Violence Cripples Haiti’s Education System

The Haitian education system is going through one of the most severe crises in its history. A recent survey by the Union of Progressive Haitian Parents (UPEPH) reveals that hundreds of schools and universities, both public and private, have ceased operations in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and in some provincial cities, hard hit by widespread insecurity and gang violence.

According to the survey conducted between February and March, 347 private schools and 51 public schools in the capital are completely paralyzed. Institutions of higher education have not been spared either: 12 faculties of the State University of Haiti, 50 private universities, seven training centers under ministerial supervision, and 29 teacher training colleges have had to shut down. Even technical and vocational centers, which are supposed to prepare young people for future careers, are out of service. UPEPH reported a total of 34 vocatio
