National Assembly in France to Examine Motion on Haiti’s Ransom of Independence

A draft resolution submitted to the French National Assembly on Wednesday, April 9, calls on the French government to recognize Haiti’s “double debt” paid to France.

Introduced by Émeline K/Bidi, deputy for the 4th constituency of Réunion and member of the Democratic and Republican Left (GDR) group, the resolution invites the government to consider a process of restitution and reparations toward Haiti. The proposal is scheduled for debate in the National Assembly on Thursday, June 5.
