Gonaïves Sees Revival of La Providence Hospital

One among the many post-earthquake projects to build peripheral hospitals aimed at easing the pressure on Haiti’s capital, La Providence Hospital in Gonaïves enjoyed a short period of effective operation before being ruined by poor governance.

Today, the staff has been strengthened, a new governance structure has emerged, the space is clean, and patients are beginning to return. The new team within the Artibonite health department aims to make it a national referral center in a context where the largest hospitals in the metropolitan area are closed, vandalized, or simply burned down.

In the city of Gonaïves, on Saturday, January 24, 2025, a blazing sun beats down on the town and scorches the heads of small vendors walking near Morne Blanc.
