Internally Displaced People: Forgotten Victims of the Haitian Crisis

More than one million people have been forced to flee their homes across the country, according to official figures. For United Nations agencies or officials, these people are merely considered internally displaced. In the metropolitan area, hundreds of thousands, forced to flee their homes overnight, do not have relatives to stay with or the means to rent a house, let alone return to their province of origin. Living in temporary shelters that are becoming permanent, Le Nouvelliste met with some of these internally displaced people during a visit to these shelters at the end of the week.

On the morning of Thursday, May 15, the day began like any other for the displaced people who found refuge in the former premises of the Fusion party in Bourdon. Since they were forced to leave their homes, their daily life has been far from peaceful. At the entrance of this shelter, two makeshift showers, without doors or curtains for privacy, welcome those who frequent the site. Wastewater from the showers is directly discharged into the street.
